This official UNFCCC special event, organised by the UNFCCC Transparency Division under the “Together for Transparency” initiative, explores how science can inform the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) and the Global Stocktake (GST). It provides insights into state-of-the-art research on global and national transformation pathways in line with net-zero targets and the Paris Agreement, including perspectives on equity and climate finance, that can help Parties better align their ambition and efforts, both individually and collectively.

Transparency is at the core of the Paris Agreement. The ETF helps Parties build a strong evidence base to support climate policymaking and identify investment needs and opportunities, while the GST allows countries and other stakeholders to take stock of collective progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement. Together with NDCs, they form the foundation for enhancing global ambition in climate action and support over time.

The session brings together researchers from two flagship Horizon Europe projects, ELEVATE and NEWPATHWAYS, to present key results on scenarios and pathways that support the design of future NDCs and the implementation of climate policies for the post-2030 period. The event is structured as a panel followed by a Q&A session, and will:

  • Provide insights into how to reach net-zero targets globally and nationally, including the latest climate policy scenarios and pathways, the expected emissions gap and possible strategies to bridge it
  • Explain which cross-cutting and sectoral transformative actions, policies and measures are needed to bridge the emissions gap, and the associated investment costs
  • Improve understanding of how to align global and national efforts with the outcomes of the first Global Stocktake (GST1)

Speakers

  • Xuehong Wang, Director, UNFCCC Transparency Division (Opening Remarks)
  • Prof. Dr. Detlef van Vuuren, Senior Researcher, PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, and Professor, Utrecht University
  • Prof. Dr. Elmar Kriegler, Head of the Research Department “Transformation Pathways”, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), and Professor for Integrated Assessment of Climate Change, University of Potsdam

Dinner at COP31 – From Pathways to Implementation: Financing an Equitable Transition Away from Fossil Fuels

This NEWPATHWAYS dinner at COP31, “From Pathways to Implementation: Financing an Equitable Transition Away from Fossil Fuels”, explores how global transition pathways can inform equitable national transitions and the financing needed to deliver them. It connects the scientific evidence on what the transition requires with the policy and financing challenges of implementation in different national contexts, drawing on emerging analysis from the Science Panel for the Global Energy Transition (SPGET), NEWPATHWAYS research on national pathways and climate finance, and emerging research on equitable transitions away from fossil fuels (ETAFFs).
