About

Project Background

The Paris Agreement calls on countries to limit global warming to well below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels. Achieving this goal requires transformations in energy systems, land use, infrastructure, and governance. The NEWPATHWAYS project responds to this by developing next-generation global and national low-emission transformation pathways that will inform and support the 2028 Global Stocktake.

Our Approach

At the heart of NEWPATHWAYS is a multi-level stakeholder dialogue bringing together policymakers, researchers, and civil society to generate knowledge and build capacity for real-world impact.

The project Consortium brings together leading experts in global and national climate pathway modelling, along with knowledge from the social sciences, economics, and policy analysis. By combining technical modelling with insight into real-world policy discussions at both national and global levels, the project aims to deliver the information decision-makers need to design stronger, more effective climate strategies that are aligned with the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement.

Our Objectives

NEWPATHWAYS aims to:

  • Establish a new generation of national and global transformation pathways that limit temporary overshoot, combine climate and nature protection, and are aligned with sustainable development and Just Transition objectives.
  • Enhance the transparency, consistency, and clarity of greenhouse gas emission reduction commitments.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage equity and finance to strengthen collective climate action.
